Sustainability

Theme 4

Our fourth theme is sustainability. Within this theme participants explore the ways in which they can make small differences to help look after our beautiful yet fragile world. Like all our value’s, sustainability is woven into everything that we do. We understand sustainability as being the ability to maintain and support a process continuously over time. It is about meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This refers not only to natural resources but also to social and economic ones as sustainability is embedded in social equity and economic development. Our core value definition of it is:

“To use methods that do not harm the environment so that natural resources are still available in the future. To be able to support eco-systems so they can continue over a period of time”

Like all of our programmes of study the way in which we cover this theme will be different for every group of students. Their input, ideas, fascinations and interests will fuel the provision but a number of common threads will appear linked to ourselves, others and the environment.

  •  Sustainably meeting our own needs

What makes me feel comfortable?

Do I feel connected to others and the space?

Do I feel that I count?

Do I feel capable?

Do I feel like I have a sense of control?

How can I feel safe, content and at my best?

  •  Sustainably meeting the needs of others

Does being fair mean everyone gets the exact same item, or that everyone gets what they need?

What makes a person valuable? Is it their money, their looks, or who they are inside?

How would the world look if every single person looked, talked, and acted exactly like you?

Why is it important to listen to someone even if they have a different accent or language?

How do you feel when someone leaves you out of a game because of how you look?

When you disagree with a friend, how can you show them that their opinion still matters?

What do you value most in a friendship?

How do you feel when you’re surrounded by friends who truly understand and support you?

  • Sustainably meeting the needs of nature

Why is it important to take care of the Earth?

How can we look after our Forest School area?

How do trees help our planet?

Do animals have the same right to a safe, happy life as humans do?

How does taking care of plants and trees show respect for the life of our planet?
